NCAA Swimming Championships 2027: Major Format Changes and the Return of 'B' Finals (2026)

The NCAA's recent decision to reinstate 'B' finals and modify the event lineup for the 2027 Championships is a significant development in collegiate swimming and diving. This move, approved by the Swimming and Diving Oversight Committee, addresses the backlash received for the 2025-26 changes, which included removing 'B' finals and other adjustments. The NCAA's response to criticism is a positive step towards creating a more inclusive and engaging championship experience for student-athletes.

One of the most notable changes is the reinstatement of 'B' finals, which will now start at 6 p.m. and be followed by 'A' finals at 7 p.m. This format brings back a familiar structure, providing a more comprehensive and satisfying championship experience. The decision to prioritize the 'B' finals is a strategic move to ensure that all participants receive recognition and a fair chance to compete.

The event order has also been adjusted, bringing back the 2025 lineup with a few modifications. The 1650 free event will remain on Day 1, but the preliminary session has been moved back to the evening, aligning with the new 'B' finals schedule. This change ensures a more cohesive and efficient flow of events, benefiting both the athletes and the broadcasting experience.

Relay heats have been moved to the evening sessions, with the two fastest heats contested during 'A' finals and the slower heats conducted in consolation finals. This adjustment aims to optimize the championship experience, providing a more dynamic and engaging atmosphere for spectators and participants alike.

Qualification standards have been revised to allow only 10% of invited student-athletes to qualify by winning a conference title. The men's standard is set at the 64th best time from the 2025-26 season, while the women's standard is at the 88th best time. This change encourages a higher level of competition and recognizes the achievements of top conference performers.

The CSCAA's Executive Director, Samantha Barany, praised the changes, emphasizing their positive impact on the student-athlete experience and the sport's future. The working group's recommendations, approved by the Oversight Committee, demonstrate a collaborative effort to address the needs of collegiate swimming and diving. By reinstating 'B' finals and making these strategic adjustments, the NCAA is taking steps to create a more inclusive and engaging championship experience, one that better serves the student-athletes and the sport's long-term development.
